Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence - nearly finished!

The Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence in the Wal Buckingham Park next to the Memorial is almost complete.

The Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence is an initiative of the GPA, Glenorie Memorial Hall Committee and Hornsby Shire Council.

Obective: to develop a fence that is in keeping with the heritage of our community, acknowledges the community contribution of the late Ray Whiteman plus honouring the military forces. The project will involve a fantasic carved sandstone fence and landscaping. The GPA is working closely with Hornsby Shire Council.

Thanks to the council, and in particular HSC Deputy Mayor Warren Waddell and Mitchell Blue and Dr Michelle Byrne of The Hills Shire Council for their assistance. The GPA Fence Committee with the Hornsby Shire Council finalised the plan and it has been exhibited and approved. Meetings have been extremely positive working closely with David De-Fina, Landscape Co-ordinator at Hornsby Shire Council and Zoe Cooke HSC in developing the cohesive plan which links the cenotaph to the Memorial Hall via the fence in one flowing design.  As a community, being able to better utilise the space is fantastic and the paths have been installed with landscaped gardens and new tree plantings. New tables and benches have been installed and the park will be able to be utilised for picnics and relaxing from the daily grind.

Now the fence is being built to complement the cenotaph and create a beautiful framework for the park, The beautiful carvings respect the sacred area for ANZAC, of course pay tribute to Ray and the heritage of our area, starting with the First Nations pier, through the convict road build with early transport Glenorie Bus Company bus sponsored by the Deaman Family who founded the GBC. We celebrate the agricultural pioneers of the area and volunteers who have contributed to our community thorugh sport, scouting and Fire Flood emergencies.

Karl Van Middeldyk of AUSSIE Stonemasons has completed all the fantastic carvings and some are pictured above. In 2025 the military carvings = Navy and Air Force and Merchant Navy, are now complete. Only the Army Rising Sun to go, donated by the Van Middeldyk Family.

Robyn Preston in her capacity as our State MP secured $10,000 to contribute to the project, directly from the Premier in the form of a discretionary grant, on top of the $20,000 Community Building Partnership Grant towards the fence. Bendigo Bank (Galston Community Bank) has contributed $50,000 towards the carvings and build and many, many wonderful members of the community have also contributed. The Shore Family has purchased one pier to be named in their honour,

Our efforts have raised over $175,000 to complete this project.

We still welcome your support to raise monies to fully fund an enhanced project, with interpretative signage and any other enhancements that may be considered.

The Future of Glenorie Investigations

Council is exhibiting a Draft Opportunity and Constraints Working Paper to guide planning for the future of Glenorie. It follows Council's resolution to implement the recommendations of the Hornsby Rural Lands Study 2022 (Hornsby RLS).

In 2023 Council finalised the agritourism and Rural Lands Planning Proposal to implement short term recommendations of the Hornsby RLS. We are commencing work on the long term recommendations, begining with Glenorie.

The Hornsby RLS recommends investigating the possibility for housing diversity around Glenorie Village in the form of 5,000-10,000m² environmental living allotments.

We encourage you to read the Working Paper, complete the Survey or attend the upcoming Community Feedback Session at Glenorie RSL Club. Council is eager to speak with local Glenorie residents, landowners and community groups about the future of the Village.

The Pavers will be laid during the planned Hornsby Shire Council upgrade of the Glenorie Memorial Hall. The exact layout is dependent upon how the 450 pavers ordered will fit into the Memorial Hall precinct. The planned installation is around September 2025.

Both a Single and Double Paver were offered, examples of which are shown below.

Please send any questions to pavers@glenorieprogress.org.au

Glenorie Memorial Hall Park & Fence

Keeping our scared site for Glenorie ANZAC Memorial accessible, fit for purpose and ready for each ANZAC Dawn Service is a major goal of the GPA. We are working with Glenorie RSL Sub Branch, the Glenorie Memorial Hall Committee, Hornsby Council and the wider community to ensure the correct barriers are in place, that are also sympathetic to site and purpose.

Glenorie Village Parking Plan

You need only attend the vicinity of Glenorie Public School at drop off or pick up time or during an event to see the dangers posed to children and families due to a lack of parking and the width of Old Northern Road. Glenorie Park’s gravel and narrow parking area is always full, cars are parked from the school for up to 100m past the school. In fact, the entirety of Glenorie’s parking capacity is becoming more congested.

Glenorie Service Station Review

Convenience returns to Glenorie. You might not need to travel all the way to Dural to fuel up the car or get a tin of petrol for your mower if Mr and Mrs Shore’s application for a service station and 12 industrial units is successful. Glenorie has missed the convenience of a local service station for many years. The plans submitted include 12 industrial units which should also encourage further local business and employment opportunities.

Glenorie Public Spaces

While Glenorie boasts some of the most pristine bushland in Sydney and wide open spaces, it offers little in the way of publicly accessible walk ways and bush corridors. A mother who wants to take their child for a decent walk in a stroller or pram is limited to estate streets or rugged tracks on the side of dangerous roads such as Cattai Ridge Road. Glenorie needs a plan to improve accessibility of its wonderful natural surrounds so that the wider community can also benefit.
